Guard Counter

How guard counters work in Elden Ring: block, then hit back with a heavy attack for extra stance damage. Timing, thrusting counters and tips.

A guard counter is a heavy attack you throw immediately after blocking a hit. It deals extra stance damage, so it is one of the quickest ways to break an enemy’s stance and stagger them, with far less risk than parrying.

How to do a guard counter

  1. Hold block and take a hit on your shield or weapon.
  2. Right after the block, press the heavy attack button. A distinct sound tells you the counter window is open.
  3. Your character swings back with a dedicated counterattack.

The timing is generous compared to a parry. You only have to react after the hit lands rather than predict it, which makes guard counters a good defensive option for players who are still learning a fight.

Why guard counters are worth using

The main point is stance damage. Guard counters wear down an enemy’s stance fast, and when it gives way they stagger. Chaining blocks and counters is a reliable way to get there, and the stagger gives you a free opening.

They can also interrupt some attacks that are being charged or channeled, if you time them right.

Thrusting counterattacks

There is also a special variant: weapons that deal pierce damage can perform a thrusting counterattack. It is a separate mechanic from the regular guard counter, but worth knowing about if you use a piercing weapon.

Tips

  • Blocking uses stamina, so keep an eye on your bar before committing to a long exchange.
  • Paired weapons like fists and claws can still guard with both in hand, so they keep access to guard counters too.
  • If you want the bigger payoff and enjoy tight timing, try parrying instead.
