Scarab

Scarabs are beetles with an eye on their back that roll balls of different colours around the world. They do not attack you. Instead they run away and roll their prize off, and if you are too slow they vanish. The colour of the ball tells you what you get: some restore charges to your Flask of Crimson Tears or Flask of Cerulean Tears, others carry ashes of war, sorceries, incantations or smithing stones. There are six colours in all, and you can hear a sound when one is nearby.

They live across the Lands Between and the Realm of Shadow. A few examples: Ash of War: Determination near the bridge southeast of the Agheel Lake North grace in Limgrave, an invisible scarab on the beach northwest of the Coastal Cave (follow its footprints), Rancorcall deep in Stormveil Castle, Frozen Armament south of Renna’s Rise, Carian Piercer on the lower level of Caria Manor, Oracle Bubbles at the bottom of the Siofra River Well, Divine Fortification southwest of Tombsward Ruins, Bloodflame Blade northwest of the Rose Church and Frenzied Burst south of the Church of Inhibition.

How to beat it

The only challenge is catching them. Approach quietly, then strike before they roll away. Once you have damaged one, its vanishing is interrupted, so ranged attacks or a quick hit from Torrent help. If one gets away, rest at a Site of Grace and it comes back. Scarabs with unique loot, like ashes of war, do not return once killed.
