Stormveil Castle
Stormveil Castle is the first legacy dungeon most players tackle, and for many it is the moment Elden Ring really clicks. The castle sits on a cliff above Stormhill, a huge maze of walls, towers, courtyards and cellars, and nearly every path through it hides a shortcut, a side room or an ambush.
Godrick the Grafted rules from the top of the keep. Before you can reach him, you have to get past Margit, the Fell Omen outside the gate, and inside you will run into Banished Knights, Exile Soldiers, grafted warhawks and a Grafted Scion guarding one of the halls. It is a tough place, but it is fair, and exploring every corner pays off.
The castle is technically optional. You can ride around it along the cliffs to reach Liurnia, but you would miss a lot: loot, characters such as Nepheli Loux and Sorcerer Rogier, and the Great Rune that Godrick carries.

How to get there
Ride north through Stormhill to the Castleward Tunnel and beat Margit. Gatekeeper Gostoc then offers to open the main gate for you, but he suggests the side path instead, and that is the route most players take: it leads through the Gateside Chamber and the cliffside instead of straight into the guarded courtyard.
Lore
Long ago, an old king ruled the castle, back when the storm that gives Stormhill its name still raged. Godrick took it after the Shattering, and the thorny craters on the outer walls, as well as the grafted soldiers inside, show what he has done to it since.
Below the castle, a pale face made of roots lies in the dark. It belongs to Godwyn the Golden, the first demigod to die, and the rot of his death has spread even here.
