Margit, the Fell Omen

Margit, the Fell Omen is the first real test of Elden Ring. He waits in the ruined courtyard outside Stormveil Castle, a huge hooded figure with a cane and a nasty grin, and he has turned back more new players than any other boss in the game.

He is fast, he mixes up his timing, and he conjures golden daggers and a holy hammer out of thin air. But he is also fair. Once you learn his patterns, he becomes a fight you can win without being any stronger, and that is exactly what the game wants to teach you here. You meet him again much later, outside the walls of Leyndell.

How to beat it

Phase 1. Margit is quick and loves long combos with delayed swings. The two attacks that leave him wide open are his big overhead strikes and his ground stab. Both can be dodged by rolling to your right, toward his cane side. The trick is to dodge away from the start of a combo while staying close enough that he finishes it, then punish the end.

He throws golden daggers from range, so do not stand far away trying to heal. Heal when he has just finished a long combo, not after a single swing.

Phase 2. Below about 60% health he summons a golden hammer and later a holy sword. The hammer slam has a long wind-up and a big follow-up hit, so wait for both before you attack. The same bait-and-punish approach still works.

Help. Sorcerer Rogier’s summon sign is near the Castleward Tunnel grace, and spirit ashes are allowed. The Margit’s Shackle item pins him to the ground for a few seconds, twice per fight, and is one of the best tools you can bring.

Lore

Margit is not what he seems. He is a disguise worn by someone you will meet properly much later, and his hatred of the Tarnished makes more sense once you know who is behind the hood.

Notes & tips

  • Margit’s Shackle, sold by Patches in Murkwater Cave, pins him to the ground twice per fight.
  • Beating him also unlocks the Roundtable Hold if you have not been invited yet.
  • If you are struggling, explore the Weeping Peninsula and eastern Limgrave first. A few levels and a +3 weapon make a huge difference.
Boss
Game:
Runes: 12,000
Parryable: Partly. Many of his cane and sword swings can be parried, but not the attacks with his summoned holy weapons.
Required to finish the game: No. You can skip Stormveil by taking the cliff path, but almost everyone fights him.
