Moore’s Questline
Moore is the gentle giant of the Land of Shadow, a kind-hearted merchant who leads the Forager Brood, a little band of friendly Pests out hunting for useful things on behalf of Miquella. He is one of the first faces you meet in Shadow of the Erdtree, camped outside Belurat, Tower Settlement.
His story is short but surprisingly touching. Do it right and you collect seven cookbooks, help Thiollier along the way and decide how this big, simple soul copes when the charm he lives under falls apart. Do it wrong and you lose things for good, so read the warnings before you swing your sword at any Pest.
Walkthrough
- Meet Moore outside Belurat. He waits with Sir Ansbach at the Main Gate Cross Site of Grace, just outside Belurat, Tower Settlement on the Gravesite Plain. Talk to him to open his shop. Buy anything at all and he opens up for more conversation.
- Fetch the Black Syrup for Thiollier (optional). Meet Thiollier at the Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace, then go back to Moore. He hands you the Black Syrup to take to Thiollier. Do this early: once either of them leaves his first spot, the syrup can no longer be had in this playthrough.
- Find the Forager Brood. Six friendly Pests from Moore’s brood are scattered across the Land of Shadow, and each one gives you a cookbook when you talk to it: Cookbook 1 on the cliffside northwest of the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past grace on the Scadu Altus, Cookbook 2 south-southeast of the Cliffroad Terminus grace, east of Prospect Town, Cookbook 3 northeast of the Cerulean Coast grace on the Cerulean Coast, past the lightning rams, Cookbook 5 in the swamp northeast of the Moorth Ruins grace, beyond the cave full of Miranda Sprouts, and Cookbook 6 on the outer wall of Shadow Keep, west of the Church District Highroad grace.
- Warm up the shivering Pest. The Pest north of the Church of the Crusade sits frozen and silent. Use a Warming Stone or a Sunwarmth Stone next to it, then quit and reload to receive Cookbook 4.
- Collect the seventh cookbook from Moore. Once you have helped the cold Pest, talk to Moore. He thanks you on behalf of the brood with Cookbook 7.
- Answer Moore when Miquella’s charm breaks. Later in the story, the charm Miquella holds over his followers shatters, and Moore asks you whether they must be sad forever. Your answer decides his fate (see the consequences below). If you still need cookbooks or the Black Syrup, pick the noncommittal “I don’t know”: he stays put and you can choose again later.
- Face him at the end (if he moves on). If you tell him to put it behind him, he joins the group of Miquella’s followers you fight in Enir-Ilim, past the Cleansing Chamber Anteroom grace. His gear lies on his body in that room afterwards.
Missable steps & failure conditions
- Leave the Pests alone. Killing one friendly Pest of the Forager Brood earns you a sad warning from Moore. Killing a second makes him invade you on the spot. Beat him and his story ends there: you get his Bell Bearing and gear early, but you may lose the Black Syrup and any cookbooks you have not collected. If you ignore the invasion or die to him, he stays friendly as if nothing happened.
- The Black Syrup is easy to miss. It disappears for this playthrough once Thiollier or Moore leaves his first location. Burning the Sealing Tree also sends Thiollier off to the Garden of Deep Purple, after which you can no longer deliver it.
- Get every cookbook before you answer him. Choosing “Put it behind you” or “Remain sad forever” after the charm breaks, or killing Moore, can lock you out of the cookbooks you are still missing.
Endings & consequences
- Put it behind you. Moore finds comfort in Miquella’s promise and later stands against you in Enir-Ilim alongside Needle Knight Leda and her allies. If you have met Thiollier but not yet got the Black Syrup, talk to Moore straight away after this choice to receive it.
- Remain sad forever. Moore sinks into despair and dies after your next rest. You find his body near the cold Pest by the Church of the Crusade, with his Bell Bearing and gear. One less opponent in the Enir-Ilim fight.
- I don’t know. He stays where he is and you can answer again later. If you burn the Sealing Tree without ever choosing, he stays at his camp for good and sits out the Enir-Ilim fight; his Bell Bearing then turns up at the Main Gate Cross grace.
- The cleanest route. Collect all seven cookbooks and the Black Syrup first. After that, some players deliberately provoke his invasion to claim the Verdigris gear early and keep him out of the later fight.
