Gurranq’s Questline

Gurranq, Beast Clergyman is a huge, hooded beast priest who lives in the Bestial Sanctum at the north-eastern edge of Caelid. He has one hunger above all others: Deathroot, the strange growth that springs up where Those Who Live in Death gather. Bring him some and he pays you back with beast incantations, a weapon or two, and finally a rare smithing stone.

It is a simple fetch quest on the surface, but there is more to the old clergyman than he lets on. Feed him every Deathroot in the Lands Between, and your next meeting in Crumbling Farum Azula becomes a lot more personal.

Rewards

Walkthrough

  1. Get pointed to Gurranq (optional). Show a Deathroot to D, Hunter of the Dead, either in Limgrave after the Tibia Mariner in Summonwater Village or later in the Roundtable Hold. He tells you about Gurranq and marks a Sending Gate on your map that takes you straight to him.
  2. Meet Gurranq in the Bestial Sanctum. Travel to the Bestial Sanctum in the far north-east of Caelid and speak to him. If you bring at least one Deathroot, he gives you the Clawmark Seal and the Beast Eye. The Beast Eye stirs whenever you are close to another Deathroot.
  3. Keep feeding him. Hand over each new Deathroot you find and collect a reward every time. The full list is in the rewards section below.
  4. Survive his outburst. After your fourth Deathroot, reload the area and Gurranq attacks you. Take about a third of his health and he calms down. Talk to him, then reload the area so he returns to his usual spot.
  5. Bring the ninth Deathroot. For the last one he gives you an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and then leaves the sanctum.
  6. Meet him again in Crumbling Farum Azula. At the end of Crumbling Farum Azula you face the Beast Clergyman. Halfway through the fight he shows his true face as Maliketh, the Black Blade. If you finished his Deathroot quest first, he greets you with unique words.

Missable steps & failure conditions

  • No real lock-outs. The quest has no known missable points apart from killing Gurranq. If you kill him in the Bestial Sanctum he drops an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, but you can no longer trade him Deathroot.
  • His outburst is scripted. When he turns on you after the fourth Deathroot, you do not have to kill him. Wear him down by about a third of his health and he stops.
  • Maliketh is separate. You can fight Maliketh before you finish the Deathroot quest. Gurranq stays in the Bestial Sanctum and you can keep handing him Deathroot. Killing Gurranq in the sanctum does not change the Maliketh fight either.

Endings & consequences

  • Gurranq leaves the sanctum. After the ninth Deathroot he is gone from the Bestial Sanctum for good.
  • Maliketh, the Black Blade. The Beast Clergyman you face in Crumbling Farum Azula is Gurranq himself. If you finished his questline first, he has unique words for you there.
  • D, Hunter of the Dead. Meeting Gurranq also unlocks D‘s incantation shop at the Roundtable Hold.
