Freyja’s Questline

Redmane Freyja once fought for General Radahn as one of his Redmanes, and now she follows Miquella, who once tended her rotting wound when everyone else had left her for dead. She is cheerful, blunt and always up for a scrap, and you can call her in as an ally for several bosses.

When Miquella’s charm breaks, she sets off to learn what vow Miquella made with Radahn. To find out she needs a scholar’s help, and that is where you and Sir Ansbach come in. Help her and you get the Golden Lion Shield, then a final duel in Enir-Ilim.

Rewards

Walkthrough

  1. Meet her at the Three-Path Cross. She waits at the Three-Path Cross Site of Grace, north of the Gravesite Plain Site of Grace in the Gravesite Plain. She introduces herself and tells you to get a map of the crosses from the Hornsent beside her.
  2. Fight beside her (optional). Summon her against the Divine Beast Dancing Lion in Belurat, Tower Settlement, or against Rugalea the Great Red Bear. Afterwards, go back to the Three-Path Cross for new dialogue about the Hornsent and her past with scarlet rot in the Swamp of Aeonia. Do this before she leaves for Shadow Keep.
  3. Break Miquella’s charm. Her story moves on once a message tells you a great rune, and a powerful charm with it, has been broken. According to the source this happens as you advance toward Shadow Keep, either through its front entrance via Messmer’s Army Encampment, or past Bonny Village into eastern Scadu Altus, heading north from the Bridge Leading to the Village Site of Grace.
  4. Hear her plans. Return to the Three-Path Cross and exhaust her dialogue. She wants to know the nature of the vow between Miquella and Radahn, and leaves for Shadow Keep.
  5. Summon her against the Golden Hippopotamus (optional). When you enter Shadow Keep through the Main Gate, her sign is available for the Golden Hippopotamus.
  6. Find her in the Specimen Storehouse. After the Hippopotamus, she sits at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor Site of Grace in the Specimen Storehouse, crouched over a stone and struggling to read it. She regrets not asking Ansbach for help, and has nothing more to say until you get it for her.
  7. Tell Ansbach about her, then give him the scroll. Go to Sir Ansbach at the Storehouse, First Floor. First mention Freyja and exhaust all his dialogue. Then hand him the Secret Rite Scroll, which lies on a desk behind tall bookshelves on the Storehouse, Fourth Floor. The order matters, see the warnings below.
  8. Collect the letter. Rest at a Site of Grace and speak to Ansbach again. He gives you the Letter for Freyja.
  9. Deliver it. Bring the letter to Freyja on the seventh floor and exhaust her dialogue. With her doubts settled, she gives you the Golden Lion Shield and leaves Shadow Keep. Report back to Ansbach afterwards.
  10. Face her in Enir-Ilim. She turns up among Miquella’s allies in the battle past the Cleansing Chamber Anteroom Site of Grace in Enir-Ilim. After the fight, loot Freyja’s Greatsword and her armour from her body in the same room.

Missable steps & failure conditions

  • Talk about Freyja before handing over the scroll. If you give Ansbach the Secret Rite Scroll before telling him about her, he leaves as soon as you rest or travel, and you cannot get the letter from him. The only way back is to side with Leda when she turns on Ansbach: he then drops the Letter for Freyja.
  • Keeping the letter. If you never deliver it, her story stops and she is not part of the Enir-Ilim fight. She stays in Shadow Keep until you beat the final boss of the DLC, after which the Golden Lion Shield can be found where she sat.
  • Killing her after you have the Golden Lion Shield still gives you the rest of her gear, but it also keeps her out of the Enir-Ilim fight.

Endings & consequences

  • Ansbach. This quest runs through Ansbach’s questline, and his fate there can decide whether you still get the letter.
  • Leda. Freyja counts herself among Leda‘s allies. Siding with Leda against Ansbach is what rescues this quest if the scroll went to him too early. See Leda’s questline.
  • Radahn. The letter tells her that Miquella means to bring Radahn’s soul back, and she happily accepts it.
  • Her fate. If she gets the letter, she dies fighting you in Enir-Ilim. If not, she stays behind in Shadow Keep.
