Gideon’s Questline
Sir Gideon Ofnir is the leader of the Tarnished at the Roundtable Hold. He wants to become Elden Lord himself and collects everything he can learn about the shardbearers, using a whole network of spies. He is also the adoptive father of Nepheli Loux, though he treats her more as a tool than a daughter.
His questline is mostly a trade of information. He tells you where the known demigods are, then pays you in spells and a cookbook for finding the ones he cannot. It ends with a boss fight in Leyndell, Ashen Capital, where the man who knows everything finally stands in your way.
Walkthrough
- Meet Gideon (optional). If you visit the Roundtable Hold before you have defeated a shardbearer, Gideon stands in the central chamber. Talk to him until he is done and he moves to his study.
- Join the Roundtable. After defeating a shardbearer and speaking to Finger Reader Enia, Gideon welcomes you as a true member. He now shares what he knows about Godrick the Grafted, Rennala, Starscourge Radahn, Rykard and Morgott. If you have met Nepheli Loux, he will talk about her too.
- Deal with Ensha (optional). Once you pick up either half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion, Ensha of the Royal Remains ambushes you the next time you return to the Hold. Beat him, then talk to Gideon to learn where the other half may be.
- Hand over Seluvis’s Potion (optional). If you carry Seluvis’s Potion, you can give it to Gideon to get rid of it. This removes it from your inventory, and with it your chance at the Nepheli Loux Puppet or the Dung Eater Puppet.
- Reach the capital. Rest at any Site of Grace in Leyndell, Royal Capital. Gideon now has new things to say about the demigods whose whereabouts he does not know.
- Report your findings. Gideon rewards you for each of these, one dialogue option at a time: touch a Site of Grace in Miquella’s Haligtree for Black Flame’s Protection; defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella for Lord’s Divine Fortification; touch a Site of Grace in Mohgwyn Palace for Fevor’s Cookbook [3]; and defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood for Law of Causality.
- Face him in the Ashen Capital. After you defeat Maliketh, the Black Blade, Gideon waits for you in the Erdtree Sanctuary of Leyndell, Ashen Capital as a boss. He uses both sorceries and incantations, and picks up new spells if you have beaten Rykard, Malenia or Mohg. Defeat him for the Scepter of the All-Knowing and his armour.
Missable steps & failure conditions
- Collect before Maliketh. Once you have defeated Maliketh and Gideon waits in the Ashen Capital, every earlier part of Gideon’s questline is locked. The four rewards are not lost, though: you can buy them from the Twin Maiden Husks instead.
- Seluvis’s Potion is gone for good once you give it to Gideon, and so are the Nepheli Loux and Dung Eater puppets.
- Ensha only comes after a medallion half. You will not get Gideon’s hint about the other half until Ensha has attacked you and been defeated.
Endings & consequences
- Nepheli Loux. Gideon took Nepheli in when she lost the guidance of grace, but he had men raid the Village of the Albinaurics hunting for half of the medallion. When she began to doubt him, he cast her aside.
- Latenna. Gideon also hunted for Latenna, the Albinauric who knows where the other half of the medallion lies, in a cave west of the Laskyar Ruins.
- Gideon’s fate. He dies in the Erdtree Sanctuary, still convinced that a Tarnished can never become a lord.
- The fight gets harder. Every one of Rykard, Malenia and Mohg you defeat before the fight gives him a new spell from that boss.
