Gostoc’s Questline
Gatekeeper Gostoc is the hunched little servant who keeps the gate of Stormveil Castle. He hates his master Godrick the Grafted and is happy to help you inside, but he is quietly hoping you die in there so he can pick through your belongings. He even creeps after you through the castle to grab a share of your lost runes.
His story is short, but knowing it saves you a lot of runes. It ends with Gostoc as the attendant of Nepheli Loux in the throne room, selling an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Rewards
- Grace Mimic, the first time you speak to him at one of his hiding spots
- His shop, which reopens after you find him while he stalks you, again after Godrick, and again in the throne room
- Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone for 20,000 runes, added to his shop after Nepheli’s questline
- Peace of mind: no more stolen runes once you have done the talking steps
Walkthrough
- Meet him at the gatehouse. Gostoc sits in the gatehouse to the left of Stormveil’s main gate. He offers you the main gate or a side entrance. If you pick the main entrance, the gate opens when you walk up to it, and you can still use the side path anyway.
- Get locked in the storeroom (optional). When you enter a dark room in the western part of the castle, Gostoc shuts the door behind you and leaves you with a Banished Knight. Grab the Rusty Key inside and use the door to get out. If you die in there, you can come back for the key without being shut in again.
- Find his hiding spots (optional). From now on Gostoc lurks in several places, and while he does, he takes 30% of the runes you drop when you die in the castle. The first time you speak to him at one of these spots he gives you a Grace Mimic. The spots are:
- On a ledge above the Stormveil Cliffside Site of Grace, but only if you came in by the wooden scaffold of the side path and head straight back.
- On the ground floor of the western wall, after you climb the ladder beyond the door the Rusty Key opens.
- On the roof of the chapel where you meet Rogier, after you have visited the roof with the Grafted Scion and come back.
- In the Rampart Tower lift shaft, on a wooden platform you have to jump to.
- Stop the rune theft. Talk to him at any one of the first three spots, then at the Rampart Tower platform, then go back to the gatehouse and talk to him once more. After that he no longer takes your runes. Returning to him after he starts following you also opens his shop again.
- Find him in Godrick’s arena. After you defeat Godrick, Gostoc turns up in the boss room. Talk to him until he runs out of words and his shop reopens. If you skipped the step above, this also puts an end to the rune stealing.
- Let Nepheli’s story move him on. Once you have defeated Morgott, the Omen King and moved Nepheli’s questline to its last stage, exhaust Gostoc’s dialogue at the Godrick the Grafted Site of Grace and reload the area until he stops stomping on Godrick’s body and disappears.
- Visit the throne room. When Nepheli’s questline is finished, Gostoc stands at the back of Stormveil’s throne room as her attendant. Talk to him until he is done and his shop opens with an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone added.
Missable steps & failure conditions
- He takes your runes while he hides. As long as Gostoc is lurking in the castle, he grabs 30% of what you drop when you die there. Do the talking steps or beat Godrick to stop it.
- Killing him ends everything. He drops Gostoc’s Bell Bearing, a Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot and a Glass Shard, plus 30% of your dropped runes if you died in the castle, but you lose his place in Nepheli’s ending and the smithing stone in his shop.
- The final stage waits on Nepheli. Gostoc only moves to the throne room after Morgott is dead and Nepheli’s questline is completed.
Endings & consequences
- Nepheli Loux. Gostoc leaving Godrick’s arena is part of what lets Nepheli take the throne. He ends up as her attendant there. See Nepheli Loux’s Questline.
- Godrick. After Godrick falls, Gostoc is found stamping on his old master’s corpse and cursing him for all the years of abuse.
