Thiollier’s Questline
Thiollier is a nervous Tarnished poison-maker who follows Miquella, though his heart really belongs to St. Trina. At first he is simply a handy merchant selling poison gear. Once Miquella’s charm breaks, he goes looking for her, and you find him again in the Garden of Deep Purple, lost in her poisonous sleep.
His story is short but strange: you have to die a few times on purpose, tell him something he does not want to hear, and survive his anger. Do it in time and he fights beside you in Enir-Ilim and leaves you his hidden needle and outfit at the end.
Rewards
- His poison shop, from the first meeting at the Pillar Path Cross
- Thiollier’s Concoction, for bringing him Moore’s Black Syrup
- St. Trina’s Smile, for defeating his invasion in the Garden of Deep Purple
- Thiollier’s Hidden Needle, Thiollier’s Mask, Thiollier’s Garb, Thiollier’s Gloves and Thiollier’s Trousers, near the entrance after defeating Promised Consort Radahn
Walkthrough
- Meet Thiollier at the Pillar Path Cross. He stands by the Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace southeast of Castle Ensis in Gravesite Plain. Talk to him to unlock his poison shop. His story itself stays put until Miquella’s charm is broken.
- Fetch the Black Syrup (optional). After you meet Thiollier, Moore gives you the Black Syrup next time you speak to him (see Moore’s questline). Bring it to Thiollier for Thiollier’s Concoction, which the Dragon Communion Priestess‘s questline uses. Do this early, see the warnings.
- Break Miquella’s charm. To move things along, approach the front entrance of Shadow Keep through Messmer’s Army Encampment, or go past Bonny Village into eastern Scadu Altus and head north from the Bridge Leading to the Village Site of Grace. This also opens the Stone Coffin Fissure, where St. Trina is found. Talk to Thiollier again afterwards.
- Send him to St. Trina. Either find St. Trina yourself at the end of the Stone Coffin Fissure, past the Putrescent Knight, and tell Thiollier where she is, or let him search on his own. He sets off south after you defeat the Golden Hippopotamus, enter the Church District of Shadow Keep for the first time, or discover the Fissure Depths Site of Grace. He leaves once you rest, and if he went looking himself he can be summoned against the Putrescent Knight.
- Drink St. Trina’s nectar. In the Garden of Deep Purple, Thiollier lies dozing next to St. Trina. Talk to her and choose to imbibe her nectar. It kills you instantly. Keep doing it (at least four times) until you hear her voice on the death screen.
- Pass on her words. Talk to Thiollier and choose to pass on St. Trina’s words, then try again until he loses his temper.
- Survive his invasion. Rest at the nearby Site of Grace or drink the nectar once more, and Thiollier invades you. Defeat him to get St. Trina’s Smile.
- Talk to him one last time. Drink the nectar until St. Trina has nothing more to say (six times in total exhausts her), then speak to Thiollier in her room again and exhaust his dialogue.
- Enir-Ilim and the final boss. Thiollier’s sign now appears for the battle against Leda and her allies in Enir-Ilim, and, if you summoned him there, for Promised Consort Radahn. Summoning him is optional. After Radahn falls, his gear lies near the entrance.
Missable steps & failure conditions
- Get the concoction before he moves. Once Thiollier leaves the Pillar Path Cross, Moore no longer gives you the Black Syrup and Thiollier’s Concoction is gone for that playthrough, which locks out the alternative rewards in the Dragon Communion Priestess’s questline.
- Beat his invasion before the Enir-Ilim battle. If you fight Leda and her allies in Enir-Ilim before defeating Thiollier in the Garden of Deep Purple, he disappears from St. Trina’s cave and his questline ends early.
- Burning the Sealing Tree in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh sends him to the Garden of Deep Purple on his own, so grab the concoction before that.
- Summons are optional. You do not need to call him for the Putrescent Knight, the Enir-Ilim battle or the final boss. If you skip him in Enir-Ilim he cannot be summoned for Radahn, but as long as his sign was there, his items still appear after the final boss.
- Killing him outside the invasion is possible since he is a merchant who can be fought. He drops St. Trina’s Smile, and that ends his questline.
Endings & consequences
- Moore. Moore‘s Black Syrup errand only works while Thiollier is still at the Pillar Path Cross. See Moore’s questline.
- Leda. If asked, Leda decides Thiollier is no threat, so he is never hunted. He can end up fighting her in Enir-Ilim. See Leda’s questline.
- Ansbach. If both fight beside you in Enir-Ilim, Ansbach has some praise for him afterwards. See Ansbach’s questline.
- Dragon Communion Priestess. Thiollier’s Concoction feeds into her questline.
- Thiollier’s fate. Once the final boss is defeated, he leaves all of his equipment behind near the arena entrance.
