Rebirth

How to respec in Elden Ring: unlock Rebirth by defeating Rennala, what a Larval Tear costs, and how your starting class affects the reset.

Rebirth is how you respec in Elden Ring. After you defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, she will let you redistribute all your attribute points, and each stat reset costs one Larval Tear.

How to unlock it

Rebirth opens up once you beat Rennala at the Academy of Raya Lucaria in Liurnia of the Lakes. The fight gives you the Great Rune of the Unborn, and unlike the other Great Runes it is active right away, with no Divine Tower trip needed. Afterwards Rennala stays in her chamber next to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library grace, and talking to her opens the rebirth menu.

What it costs

Changing your attributes uses up one Larval Tear each time. Changing only your appearance is free. Larval Tears are limited, so it pays to plan your new build before you sit down with her.

If you open the menu and back out without changing anything, you keep your tear. That makes it safe to look at the screen and think things over.

How the points are redistributed

Rebirth does not reset you to a blank level 1. Your starting class is the base you build from. A Samurai starts with 12 points already in Vigor, for example, while an Astrologer starts with only 6. On top of that base you hand out every point you have earned up to your current level, and all of them have to be spent before you confirm.

So if you started as an Astrologer and want to turn into a heavy Strength build, you can, but you will still carry the Astrologer’s low starting numbers in physical stats.

Tips before you respec

  • Check the requirements of the weapons and spells you want to use first. Missing a requirement by a single point brings a heavy penalty, as explained in the Weapon Scaling guide.
  • Look at your stats as a whole, including Vigor and Endurance, not only your damage stat.
  • Hold on to a spare Larval Tear if you can, in case you want to adjust things afterwards.

The Great Rune of the Unborn also matters for several questlines, including those of Ranni the Witch, Sorceress Sellen and Boc the Seamster.
