Stone-Sheathed Sword
A Straight Sword from Shadow of the Erdtree that stays locked inside a cracked stone scabbard, so it hits with pure physical damage and leans a little more on Strength than Dexterity. It carries the skill Square Off and is upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones.
It is really the starting point of a small puzzle: taken to the right altars, it turns into the Sword of Darkness or the Sword of Light. The blade is said to be a relic of a long-lost civilisation, once used in rites at altars of light and darkness.

Where to find it
Found at an altar in one of three places in the Realm of Shadow: Fog Rift Catacombs, Ruins of Unte or Ancient Ruins of Rauh. The Fog Rift Catacombs altar is the trickiest to reach, so it is worth picking the sword up there, which makes the later altar visits quicker.
Be careful: once you have turned it into the Sword of Darkness or Sword of Light, you can swap between those two forms at their altars, but the Stone-Sheathed Sword itself cannot be obtained again until your next playthrough.
Item description & lore
A sword nobody can draw from its sheath of broken stone. It is a relic from an ancient, vanished people, and it is believed to have served a ritual role at altars devoted to light and to darkness.
Notes & tips
- Square Off is a plain Straight Sword skill, but still strong: the light version breaks guards and the heavy version deals heavy stance damage.
- All three forms share the same upgrade level. Upgrade the stone sword to +3 and it becomes a +3 Sword of Darkness; upgrade that to +7 and you get a +7 Sword of Light when you switch.
- Every copy in your inventory changes form when you use an altar.
