Basilisk
Basilisks are squat, finned creatures that move in short hops and lash out with their claws or sudden leaps. Their real danger is the black fog they breathe out, which builds up Death Blight. The big bulging eyes on top of their heads are fake; their real eyes are small and sit near the snout.
They like places touched by Death. You find them in dark caves along the Ainsel River, in Auriza Hero’s Grave, around the Nameless Eternal City in the Deeproot Depths, in the Lake of Rot, near the Seethewater River on Mt. Gelmir, in Volcano Manor, The Shaded Castle and the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. In the Realm of Shadow they live in Rauh Base and the Scorpion River Catacombs, and the Divine Beast Dancing Lion summons them in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.

How to beat it
Never stand in the black fog. Death Blight kills you instantly when it fills up, so back away whenever a Basilisk starts breathing and come back when the cloud has cleared. Do not fight them in tight spots where the fog lingers.
They take extra damage from fire and slashing weapons, so those are the tools to bring. Status effects barely work on them. You can break their stance, but you cannot follow up with a critical hit. A Beast-Repellent Torch keeps them at a distance, and a Beastlure Pot pulls them away.
Lore
The fake eyes on a Basilisk’s head look a lot like those of the Prince of Death, and the soulless body of Godwyn the Golden also has finned forelimbs much like theirs.
